Mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and U.S. Navy aerial photography, 1947–62. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Wolf V. Vishniac (1922–73), professor of biology at the University of Rochester, New York, who made Antarctic studies (1971–72 and 1973) on the water absorption of soil particles and its microbiological significance, and the ability of microorganisms to withstand a hostile milieu.
